The Cognitive Walkthrough Method

To get started:

What is it?

It is a method used to assess the ergonomics of a device by focusing on how easily a user can learn to use the device in an effective and error-free manner.

To do so, the evaluator will put himself in the shoes of the future user and will follow a usage scenario by completing defined tasks.

The objective:

The aim of this method is to ensure that the device is intuitive and easy to use, even for users who are not familiar with it, thereby minimizing the risk of errors that could compromise patient or user safety.

When should this method be applied?

This method is implemented during the preliminary design phases.

It is therefore a method that can be used during formative evaluations.

In summary:

The Cognitive Walkthrough is used to

  • Identify usability issues
  • Improve the safety of users and patients
  • Be in compliance with regulations (CE marking...)
